Ernest Hemingway: Selected Letters 1917-1961

First Edition - Edited by Carlos Baker

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1981.

First edition of the first published collection of Hemingway’s personal letters. O riginal cloth, illustrated endpapers. Missing dust jacket. Cloth is a little loose at the top of the spine.  Binding is still tight.  On page 759 and 760 small paper crease is visible. (see pics) Corners of the cloth board cover are slightly bent in.  All would be considered normal ware and tare.  Writing on inside as a Christmas gift.  Owner embossed to their library.

Even though Hemingway's public image is well-known and his life is full of legendary tales, there are few who truly knew him personally. But with this unique collection of letters - the very first to be published - a new side of Hemingway is unveiled. Spanning from 1917 to 1961, this extensive selection of almost 600 letters serves as both a self-portrait and an autobiography. In his distinct way of writing, Hemingway opens up to various individuals: relatives, acquaintances, foes, publishers, translators, and nearly every notable writer of his time.
